A mother does not let her child go off entirely on their own, but she also doesn’t allow them to hang onto her skirt. Throughout the second year, parents may feel they are walking a fine line between being over restrictive and being negligent. ![]() ![]() ![]() One way carries the risk of hindering a baby’s development, and the other allows the baby to hurt themselves or others or damage property. Here are some ways of helping raise an independent toddler. Play “out of sight” games. Encouraging toddlers to work themselves out of their own dilemmas helps them develop a sense of self- reliance. Watch for signs of separation stress. There are times when toddlers still need to cling, some more than others. On days when your usually fearless explorer won’t leave your side, honor his wishes but try to figure out why he is staying so close. Have you been distracted or too busy to attend to him? Has he had more separation than he can handle lately? Refuel his connectedness “tank” with some time together, and he’ll be off on his own again soon. Helping a toddler by letting him have “just being” time. Take time to let your independent toddler just be with you, on your lap cuddling and talking at various times throughout the day. First thing in the morning is a favorite time for our Lauren to want this, especially if she’s slept in her own bed that night, or if Martha or I got up before her and we missed that snuggle time in bed. If I let her “be” until she called a halt, she charged herself for a nice long stretch of independent toddler time. Remember, children’s behaviors are more challenging to deal with when they are making the transition from one developmental stage to the next. By easing the transition, you lessen the discipline problems that tag along. Becoming interdependent. Many child- rearing theories teach that a prime parenting goal is to get the child to be independent. This is true, but gaining independence is only part of becoming an emotionally healthy person. A child must pass through three stages on becoming a healthy person: Dependence Toddler: “You do it for me.” The infant under 1 year old is totally dependent on parents. Independence Toddler: “I do it myself.” During the second year, the independent toddler with the encouragement of parents, learns to do many things independent of parents. Interdependence Toddler: “We do it.” This is the most mature stage. The child has the drive to accomplish a feat by themselves but has the wisdom to ask for help to do it better. For a child to have the best chance of becoming an emotionally healthy person, they should be encouraged to mature through each of these stages gradually. Getting stuck in the dependent stage is as crippling as is being forced out of it too soon. Remaining in the independent stage is frustrating. Maturing into interdependence equips children with the ability to get the most out of others, while asking the most of themselves. Interdependence means the parent and child need each other to bring out the best in each other. Without your child challenging you as they go through each stage, you wouldn’t develop the skills necessary to parent them. Here’s where the connected pair shines. They help each other be the best for each other. Learning interdependence prepares a child for life, especially for relationships and work. In fact, management consultants teach the concept of interdependence to increase productivity. The ability to know when to seek help and how to get it is a valuable social skill that even a 2 year old can learn: “I can do it myself, but I can do it better with help.”Throughout all stages of development, a child goes from being solitary to being social, from wanting to be independent to wanting to be included. In fact, going back and forth from oneness to separateness is a lifelong social pattern among interdependent people. You want your child to be comfortable being alone and with other people, and which state predominates depends on the child’s temperament. Interdependence balances children who are predominantly either leaders or followers. An independent individualist may be so tied up in themselves that they miss what the crowd has to offer. On the other hand, the dependent child is so busy following the crowd that they never gets a chance to develop leadership. Learning to be interdependent ties in with the child learning to be responsible. When children get used to seeking help from other people, they naturally learn to consider the effects of their behavior on others. Truly happy and healthy people are neither dependent nor independent; they are interdependent. Helping an independent toddler play alone. Part of self- discipline is the ability to enjoy playing alone. While technically true, we’re fast learning that resistant starch may be a special type of prebiotic with a special place in the human diet. Before I go any further, though, a series of hat tips to Richard Nikoley, Tatertot Tim, and Dr. BG, whose early and ongoing research into the benefits, real- world implications, and clinical applications of resistant starch have proved to be a real asset for the ancestral health community. Where Do We Get It? We can get RS from food. The richest food sources are raw potatoes, green bananas, plantains, cooked- and- cooled potatoes, cooked- and- cooled- rice, parboiled rice, and cooked- and- cooled legumes. We can get RS from supplementary isolated starch sources. ![]() The best sources are raw potato starch, plantain flour, green banana flour, and cassava/tapioca starch. Raw (not sprouted) mung beans are a good source of RS, so mung bean starch (commonly available in Asian grocers) will probably work, too. The most reliable way to get lots of RS, fast, is with raw potato starch. There are about 8 grams of RS in a tablespoon of the most popular brand: Bob’s Red Mill Unmodified Potato Starch. Like any other organism, gut bacteria require sustenance. They need to eat, and certain food sources are better than others. That’s the basic – and most important – function of RS. What Are the Health Benefits of Consuming RS? What does the research say? Preferentially feeds “good” bacteria responsible for butyrate production. Butyrate is crucial because it’s the prime energy source of our colonic cells (almost as if they’re designed for steady exposure to butyrate!), and it may be responsible for most of the other RS- related benefits. Improves insulin sensitivity. One reason some people avoid even minimal amounts of carbohydrate is the blood glucose response; theirs is too high. Resistant starch lowers the postprandial blood glucose spike. This reduction may also extend to subsequent meals. Reduces fasting blood sugar. This is one of the most commonly mentioned benefits of RS, and the research seems to back it up. Increases satiety. In a recent human study, a large dose of resistant starch increased satiety and decreased subsequent food intake. May preferentially bind to and expel “bad” bacteria. This is only preliminary, but there. It’s also been found to be an. Probably because it improves gut function and integrity, resistant starch increases dietary magnesium absorption. What do user anecdotes say? Improves body composition. Seeing as how RS consumption promotes increased fat oxidation. Another possibility is that resistant starch is feeding serotonin- producing gut bacteria, and the serotonin is being converted to melatonin when darkness falls. Increases mental calm. The latest science indicates that our gut flora can impact our brain, and specific probiotics are being explored as anti- anxiety agents, so these reports may very well have some merit. Are There Any Downsides? For all the success stories, the message boards are also rife with negative reactions to RS. They take it, maybe too much to start, and get gas, bloating, cramping, diarrhea or constipation, a sense of “blockage,” headaches, and even heartburn. I think RS supplementation may be a good measuring stick for the health of your gut. Folks with good gut function tend to respond positively, while people with compromised guts respond poorly. The gas, bloating, cramps and everything else are indicators that your gut needs work. But it’s not the “fault” of resistant starch, per se. What to do if you’re one of the unlucky ones? You’ve got a few options: You could skip it altogether. I think this is unwise, personally, because the role of fermentable fibers, including RS, in the evolution of the human gut biome/immune system has been monumental and frankly irreplaceable. There’s a lot of potential there and we’d be remiss to ignore it. You could incorporate probiotics. You need the guys that eat the RS to get the benefits of consuming RS. And sure, you have gut flora – we all do, for the most part, except after colonic sterilization before a colonoscopy or a massive round of antibiotics, maybe – but you don’t have the right kinds. Probiotics, especially the soil- based ones (the kind we’d be exposed to if we worked outside, got our hands dirty, and generally lived a human existence closer to that of our ancient ancestors), really seem to mesh well with resistant starch. You should reduce the dose. Some people can jump in with a full 2. RS and have no issues. Others need to ramp things up more gradually. Start with a teaspoon of your refined RS source, or even half a teaspoon, and get acclimated to that before you increase the dose. You could eat your RS in food form. Potato starch and other supplementary forms of RS are great because they’re easy and reliable, but it’s also a fairly novel way to consume RS. You might be better off eating half a green banana instead of a tablespoon of potato starch. My Experience. The first time I tried potato starch, I got a lot of gas. Not the end of the world, and I realize gas is a natural product of fermentation, just unpleasant. It died down after a few days, but it was only after I added in some of my Primal Flora probiotic that I started seeing the oft- cited benefits: better sleep, vivid dreams, a more “even keel.”Now, I do potato starch intermittently. I’m very suspicious of eating. I tend to cycle foods, supplements, exercises, everything. Gas production goes up every time I re- start the potato starch, but not unpleasantly so and it subsides relatively quickly, especially when I take the probiotics. So there’s a learning curve to RS. It’s not a cure all, but neither is anything else. It’s merely an important, arguably necessary piece of a very large, very complex puzzle. Resistant starch is vitally important for gut (and thus overall) health, but it’s not the only thing we need. It’s likely that other forms of fermentable fiber (prebiotics) act synergistically with RS. Hey, it’s almost like eating actual food with its broad and varied range of bioactive compounds, polyphenols, fibers, resistant starches, vitamins, and minerals tends to have the best effects on our gut biome! You can certainly enhance the picture with isolated refined resistant starches and fibers like unmodified potato starch, but they can’t replace what our bodies really expect: the food. Grains that fail inspection, human food past its expiration date, uninspected pieces and parts of waste from the seafood industry, leftover restaurant grease, deceased livestock, and even roadkill is collected and disposed of through rendering - a process that converts human food industry waste into raw materials for the pet food industry. They add bulk vitamin and mineral supplements (most from China), and then they extrude the mix at high temperatures (the process that makes kibble, or dry food), creating all sorts of toxic reactions including advanced glycation end products and cancer causing heterocyclic amines. They call these crunchy little pellets and canned goo . We are beginning to see words like . No factory farmed, nutrient deficient meats? No synthetic preservatives or vitamins? The problem is there isn't a set . But the substitutes have significant nutritional implications as well. Manufacturers are hearing the rumblings of educated pet owners and are updating their marketing to try to regain lost customers by changing their ingredients to regain market share. But the issues remain the same: using poor quality ingredients, relying on synthetic nutrients (instead of nutrient dense foods), and utilizing extensive processing techniques to extend shelf life means most pet food is dead food. Feeding a lifetime of processed foods makes it impossible for your pet's body to be as vibrantly healthy as it should be. Vegetables and fruits provide antioxidants and fiber to animals that no longer hunt whole prey. Natural sources of trace minerals, vitamins, and fatty acids must be added, since the soils in which foods are grown are depleted of many of the nutrients pets need. Also, food storage, whether it's in a freezer or a pantry, decreases critical essential fatty acid levels in foods. Pets need unadulterated, fresh, whole foods that are moisture dense. Shopping sales, utilizing local food co- ops and buying in bulk can often bring the cost of an excellent quality homemade diet to less than the cost of many super premium dry foods on the market today. Make sure to follow a balanced recipe if you do home- prep; homemade nutrient deficient diets aren't the goal. Yes, homemade diets take time and effort, but the payoff is substantially healthier pets with fewer vet bills. Many folks can only afford one meal of fresh food a day, or several meals a week.
